Summary of 'Ghadr Party Lehar' By Jagjit Singh
The global Ghadri Baba, Sardar Jagjit Singh, (1904-1997), the Professor of Chemistry, seeks the 'indulgence of the readers for not having been able to put in his best effort due to limitations of advanced age in recapturing the global Perspective View of the Sikh Revolution in the global historical revolutionary perspective'.
Likewise handicapped due to 'limitations of advanced age' is the global Ghadri Baba, Sardar Bhagwand Singh Grewal from Los Angeles California, who wrote to him on June 18, 1956; whose copy is appended herein. Admitting that he immensely enjoyed reading his book 'GADAR PARTY LEHER', Sardar Bhagwand Singh Grewal notes that it brought back the 'memories of events that took place when we were young and vigorous'. Also it highlighted the difficulties in recapturing the global perspective view of the Sikh revolution, the 'Ghadrites' vis-a-vis the 'Ghadars'; the 'Revolutionaries' vis-a-vis the 'Judas/ Traitors' I so-called pseudo icons, of non-violence who 'Experiment with Truth'- akin to the provable story of the several blind men, each trying to describe the ungraspable elephant. Sardar Bhagwand Singh Grewal summed up these difficulties in the Postscript, 'The story of Ram Chandra is too complicated to write but it will come out in detail and documents in the autobiography'- of the 'Ghadars' by those paid hired historians, the masters who 'Experiment with Truth'.
Another man of. science, also from Los Angeles California, Dr Jsbir Singh Mann, an orthopedic surgeon, who has undertaken this mammoth 're-visit' the 'GADAR PARTY LEHER', through scientifically 'scanning' in his own inimitable Global Sikh Studies Research Works-, by Convening the Western and Eastern Research Scholars Conference at Stockton, whose Papers and Abstracts presented by the doyen research scholars are also appended herein. These too confirm and highlight the difficulties in recapturing and interpret the Sikh Movement in the historical revolutionary perspective. Another historian doyen, Dr Kirpal Singh in his Forward to 'Dynamics of Sikh Revolution' expresses the grateful thanks of the Institute of Sikh Studies, to the family of Sardar J agjit Singh especially his elder daughter who handed over the manuscript for publication. Another man of letters and of the media Sardar Karanjit Singh who has been a regular reviewer of his books, published a Tribute to Sardar Jagjit Singh in the Tribune, which we thankfully have also appended herein.
Sardar Jagjit Singh bids adieu, "I have completed ninety-two years of my life on February 12, 1996, hence this is virtually the last flicker of my amateurish urge to interpret the Sikh Movement in the historical revolutionary perspective. This is virtually the last flicker of an humble attempt to understand the Sikh Revolution in the light of the studies, relevant to our purpose, of revolutionary movements, carried out by eminent Scholars. I seek the indulgence of the readers for not having been able to put in my best effort due to limitations of advanced age - - et ell." The next generation family members and extended family members of Sardar Jagjit Singh have given full support by researching collating making available all relevant papers for publication, in keeping virtually alive the last flicker relevant to our research purpose, to be carried out by eminent Scholars. Among others, like a Veteran Colonel Gurbax Singh, Sardar Jagjit Singh' s father-in-law; another Veteran Colonel Perminder Singh Randhawa, a nephew, adds an humble attempt undertaking this seva to virtually keep the last flicker 'on-going' to 'understand the Sikh Revolution in the historical revolutionary perspective', from a point of view of an awakened Veteran like Major General Smedley Butler till 'War is (no longer) a Racket'.
Like Jagjit Singh it is again felt that the requirement of the subject that appropriate words expressing the emotion calculatively should be used. But complete success could not be achieved in that, partly being the personal weakness of the writer and partly because of the paucity of Punjabi words which could express it more distinguishably. For the same reason the English -vords equivalent to the Punjabi Words which could express it more distinguishably. For the same reason the English words equivalent to the Punjab words have been given in brackets to clarify the real sentiment expressed in Punjabi. Apart from the printing errors (which remained there inspire of a great attention given to it), the spelling also could not be used uniformly because no authority on these could be found. The words of Urdu, Hindi and English which are commonly used, have been used invariably because there should be no narrow-mindedness and unreasonableness in the matter of the development of a language and its heritage could not be negated because of temporary political grudges. The surname or nicknames or the name of the their villages have been given with the names of the persons in inverted comas to distinguish the one from the other.
About The Author of 'Ghadr Party Lehar'
S Jagjit Singh was a multifaceted personality who had a prominent trait of humanity. After meeting him everyone returned with a spiritual happiness. He was closely associated with prominent freedom fighters especially of Ghadr Party Lehar, Akali Lehar, Babbar Akali Lehar and with Bhagat Singh and his colleague's party Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. Besides this, he was also familiar with the other parallel freedom fighters. This was the reason that characteristic of humanity was so mixed with his personality that he became a living history.
He inherited Sikhi from his Grand Maternal and Paternal parents. The Singh Sabha Movement enriched him with the basic principles of Sikhism. After that Sant Wasakha Singh, who was 1 considered the pioneer of Ghadar Party Movement had such an impact on his thinking that he firmly decided to write the history of Ghadr Party Movement. After publication when this book came to light Sant Wasakha Singh was so happy that he commented that S Jagjit Singh has recorded the truth. By commenting so, he meant that Jagjit Singh had written this book on an historic point of view as the book while recording the achievements of the Ghadr Party Lehar, simultaneously, recorded pitfalls of the Lehar fearlessly since he was fully acquainted with the personal and public lives of the leaders he was successful in bringing out an unbiased analysis of the movement.
