Importance of Name

A man -- an individual -- is one among the millions of the human eace around the world. Being a social animal, he must interact with others of his kind. Interaction needs identification. It is his name, among others, which provides him identification.

An individual is given a name quite early in his life when he may just be days or weeks old. That name he wears as a tag for rest of his life and differentiates him from others who have their own names.

The name is given to a man, when he is just a baby, with all fanfare, in the presence of his immediate social circle as witness as well as provider of goodwill so necessary for his growth and progress. There is usually an elaborate ritual and ceremony, with highly religious overtones, when he is bestowed with a name. The name is sanctified by prayers, as in an Akand Path, only to make the name by which the man is henceforth going to be known, a name to reckon with, a banner under which would march the caravan of his life to its destined goal. By taking the name -­ nameless was he born -- he becomes an entity, an individual who has right to -- and is a master of – his own life.
