"Haumay" (egoism or self-exaltation occupies such a place in the Adi Granth Scripture of the Siks sanctioned as "living" Guru by Guru Gobind (the Tenth Nank), that its message would be lost on anyone who has no grasp of the subject. Te book makes it easy for all to understand it.

The author approaches the subject systematically. He discusses both negative and positive aspects of egoism and, for this purpose, divides the work into two parts. The first part-"Egoism', a hurdle"- describes how man's egoismis chiefly responsible for not only distancing man from god but also for driving a wedge between human beings at all levels-family, society, state and nations, thus causing avoidable strains and strife in the world.

This part throws light on the true nature of egoism - how silently and subtly it operates, its ramifications, wide sweep and the sesultant misery all around.

The second part-"egoism, a help"--describes how a pilgrim of the path divine can turn this bane into a boon. It guides one as to how simply by acting upon the Holy Word, crude egoism can be tamed and chiselled into a thing of beauty that can emancipate one in one's life-time and can unite one with God-never to separate again like water uniting with water, light with light.                        .

A plus-point of the book is its faithful rendition in verse of quite a number of compositions comprising the mystic experiences of the saints and Gurus and examples of the crude as also refined and consummated forms of pride. The book can be of much use for those interested in devotional singing in the English-speaking world.                                                                                      ·

S. Harbans Singh Sethi started his career as a sub-editor in the Indian Express", Delhi after post-graduation in English and Diploma in Journalism from the Punjab University. He has been a prolific writer for newspapers and magazines, a photographer of consequence, an "A Class commentary writer for feature films of the Films Divisions and chief editor of a government magazine for 16 years. Illustrated writing has been his forte.

The author, at one time, was reviewing books-specially those related to Sikhism-for three news papers. After his retirement from the Indian Information Service, he has switched over to the study of theology. He brings his writing experience to bear upon this book.
