Message of Guru Gobind Singh and Other Essays by Dr. Balbir Singh makes a commendable contribution to the theological studies, pertaining to Sikhism in particular and religion as a whole in general. The essays by Dr. Balbir Singh are marked by profundity, perceptiveness and precision. They are a testimony to the comprehensive scholarship, erudition, and insight of the author who is deeply rooted in the philosophical , religious and theological tradition of India. Moreover, he has an enviable command over the Semitic lore and learning.

I take delight in introducing the essays to the students of religion in the hope that they will benefit by Dr. Balbir Singh's catholicity of vision and the sweep of his mind. It is heartening that Mrs. Mohinder Kaur has edited the essays with loving care and painstaking effort.

Foreword To The Book 'Message of Guru Gobind Singh and Other Essays'

The present volume is a selection of essays originally written in English by Dr. Balbir Singh. A man of varied interests, he integrated, assimilated and expressed himself as a scientist, educationist, humanist, banker, lecturer and above all a religious philosopher delving deeply in the theology of Sikh Scriptures. Not withstanding his wide ranging interests, Dr. Balbir Singh left his distinctive mark on everything which became a part of the orbit of his consciousness.

Due to a persistent demand from his admirers, I have attempted the difficult task of presenting a representative sample of his thoughts, vision and scholarship in English. This small collection of essays, will, I hope succeed in making available to Dr. Balbir Singh's admirers some of his more important writings in a readily accessible form. Moreover, what is no less important - it is designed for accomplishing the task of providing exposure to and initiating new readers, especially, younger people. I should feel amply rewarded if some of the readers are stimulated enough to explore further the vast corpus of scholarly labour left behind by Dr. Balbir Singh.
