Under the force of historical circumstances, the nineteenth century India witnessed the emergence and growth of a number of socio-religious movements such as the Brahma Samaj, the Arya Samaj, the Sanatan Dharama and the Dev Samaj among the Hindus; the Nirankaris, the Namdharis and the Singh Sabha among the Sikhs; and the Anjuman Himayat-i-Islam, Lahore, and the Ahmadyia Movement of Qadian, among the Muslims. Besides these movements, there was another socio­-spiritual movement called the Radha Soamis which was unique in character in gaining popularity and influence and its aim was only to revive the teachings of the Saints and the mechanism of spiritualism in and outside India. Since 1878 (the demise of Shiv Dyal Singh) the Radha Soamis of Agra have developed into about sixteen major schismatic groups of which the Beas Radha Soamis (since 1891) is emerging as most important.

The book may break fresh ground in understanding the socio-cultural history of the Punjab in general and the impact of the Radha Soamis of Beas and their schismatic groups in particular.
