The Divine Master is the first ever attempt made at constructing an authentic biography of Guru Nanak Dev. The book starts with a portrayal of the socio-politico-religious milieu into which Guru Nanak was born and proceeds to delineate how he was able to evoke a new way of humane and meaningful living from the then prevailing situation. Uppermost consideration has been given to the accounts available in the Adi Granth and Vars of Bhai Gurdas as historical evidence. Leaving aside a few descriptions of events inter-woven with mystries of the divine, the Janamsakhis have been treated as "accounts full of mythological des­criptions and fictitious tales." The course of travels of Guru Nanak has been followed in a way so as to decipher the correct itinerary. For the first time attention was drawn towards Baghdad inscription as an evidence of sojourn of the Guru at Baghdad. The "Master's Creed" is a chapter on the teachings of Gum Nanak wherein the basic concepts of the gospel of Nanak as distinguished from the tenents of other religions have been brought into focus. The Divine Master surely set the pace for serious study on the life and teach­ings of Guru Nanak. The book is now being made available in an edited form in order to highlight it's importance in the historiography of Guru Nanak.

About The Author Of The Book 'The Divine Master - Life And Teachings Of Guru Nanak'

Born in Gujranwala (Pakistan) Professor Prithipal Singh Kapur received his education at Khalsa High School, Gujranwala and Cantonment Board School, Jalandhar Cantt. For college education he attended the Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi and Ramgarhia College, Phagwara. He started his career as a research scholar at the National Archives, Government of India, where he worked under the guidance of an eminent historian Dr. S.N. Sen on the project 'Punjab in Eighteen Fifty Seven'. He was the first person to unfold Rajib Ali Papers and Tula Ram---Gopal Deo correspondence. For a while, he also worked with the Sikh History Department, Khalsa College, Amritsar. He earned admira­tion and eminence as a Postgraduate teacher of History at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, Government College, Hoshiarpur and the Punjabi University, Patiala. He was founder Principal of Guru Nanak Nav Bharat College, Narur Panchhat (Kapurthala) from where he shifted to Chandigarh as Director of the Universities Text Book Board, Punjab. As an edu­cationist, he is rated as a man of vision with capacity to take right and firm decisions. Professor Kapur has kept himself engaged in the field of Historical research and general writing eversince he brough't out his first work-biography of Jassa Singh Ramgarhia in 1957. Presently, he is working as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
