This is a compilation of my lectures in Sikhism and other related subjects delivered over the last two years or so.
In the essays on Sikhism, I have focussed on certain new doctrinal aspects of Sikh religion in continuation of the philosophical postulates analysed in my earlier Works: The Sovereignty of the Sikh Doctrine and The Doctrine and Dynamics of Sikhism.
Sikhism, being an institutional religion, has both universal and historical dimensions, and not being a 'closed' system of thought and praxis has to develop on both of these levels. I have stressed in the following articles that Sikhism is neither an ethnicity-specific nor a region-specific; from this angle the existential concerns of the Sikhs need to be distinguished from the universal concerns of Sikhism as a world religion.
The global civilization of the third millennium would, it seems, be based on the concept of Spirit analogous to the way in which the modern Western civilization of the past few centuries of the second millenium evolved on the Enlightenment notion of reason as its foundational principle presumed to be operative in nature, thought, history and society. Sikhism, being essentially a religion with spirit as its foundational category, can play a significant role in evolving the 21st century society and the third millennium civilization.
In the other essay also, there is the continuing thread of pluralism which is one of the main aspects of postmodernist thought in its different varieties.
The essays on Sikhism, including two lectures delivered by the author on 18,20 April,2000 at the University of California, bring out certain new doctrinal aspects of Sikh religion-a field in which he has already earned national and international recognition with his seminal Work: The Sovereignty of the Sikh Doctrine.
Expounding an original view that the world civilization-distinguishable from the 'modern' Western civilization that evolved on the Enlightenment notion of reason-would be based on the concept of spirit as its basic category, can play a significant role in evolving the new, pluralist civilization of the third millennium in the offing.
In the other essays also, the postmodernist stress on pluralism has been well analysed in its various forms and apects.
In Beyond Postmodernism, Dr. Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, presenting a critique of postmodernist discourses propounds the concept of 'systems thinking' as the epistemic counterpart of the ontological notion of spirit, taking contemporary discourse beyond its present postmodernist premises and dimensions.
